Garden at Grandpa's

Working in a garden brings out the country in me that I sometimes let slip away.
"Corn Day" is a big event for my family. Everyone comes together on the day the corn is ready.
There are jobs for everyone...
  • cutting the ears off the stalks
  • hauling the wheelbarrow full of ears then hauling back full of cobs and shucks.
  • shucking
  • silking
  • boiling
  • cutting off
  • packing and freezing
  • and someone has to make lunch for all the hungry workers
Today was Corn Day, and family members from their early twenties to their mid eighties enjoyed hard work and fellowship all in the name of great, home-grown food.

"Garden at Grandpa's" was fortunate to be featured in a blog called Butterfly in the Attic in an entry titled "Memories of My Country Home." It's a lovely description expressed through art, photographs, and words.  Take a moment to have a look.

  2. thank you for including my treasury in your blog.
Sukkot is a very interesting holiday, celebrates harvest from fields and also the fragility of life. The tradition is to build a makeshift house outside to eat all of our meals for 8 days. That reminds us that not everyone is lucky enough to have a house and anything can change at any moment. Also In honor of the holiday's historical significance, we are commanded to dwell in temporary shelters, as our ancestors did in the wilderness (when the jews were in the desert for 40 years).

    thank you again!

  5. Thank you for mentioning my treasury "Give Me That Down Home Country Kitchen". This picture made me smile reminding me of the past when I would go to my Granparent's house in Metamora, Indiana. A beautiful place....miss those times. Love your blog site! Will follow!
