Red Chair

What makes me love this painting so much?
I do love a great porch.  I love a pretty door... nice blooming plants... a blue sky...
Hmmm...

This little 8"x 10" painting is the 100th Weekly-ish Challenge painting with my art mentor / dear friend Cheri. 100!!!

We started during COVID, a time when we needed a way to boost our creativity and an excuse to talk for a hour each week or so. Cheri lives in another state, but that hasn't kept us from being painting partners. We came up with the idea then made some rules.
1. We'd take turns coming up with a challenge word
* *unless we chose a phrase or concept.
2. We'd do an oil painting in response to the challenge
* *unless we chose to do art is some other way.
3. We'd have one week to complete our art projects
* *unless we needed a few extra days... or weeks.
4. We'd text to let the other know when we finished
* *unless we were already talking for another reason.
5. We'd have fun and laugh...

I'm a loyal fan of using Blurb, so of course we made little books to record our project.
Here are links.

  • Flip through and enjoy!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to my friend Sara Harley who has the most wonderful collection of photos that she's taken over the years.  When I get stuck in a I-have-no-idea-what-to-paint mode, she comes through with the perfect reference photo.

  1. That looks like an inviting spot to sit and sip morning coffee (or coffee any time of the day). Nice painting!

    1. It does look inviting... although, now that I'm looking again and feeling every bit of my nearly 61 years... I'm noticing that the thought getting up out of that low chair isn't as pleasant isn't as pleasant as the thought of enjoying sitting in it. Ha ha ha!

  2. I'd love to sit there! That's pretty neat about your friend supplying the perfect photo when you're stuck. Sounds like she knows you well.

    1. Funny how the blog-world works... She's a dear dear friend although we've never met in person. Nova Scotia and Arkansas aren't exactly neighbors.

  3. I'm glad you found a photo to inspire you! Beautiful painting, as always! We have two of those chairs on our front porch, but I'm thinking it's time to replace them with more "senior friendly" seats. I don't enjoy them as much as I used to, lol. Although they are still wonderful to look at!

  4. Odd... Blogger wouldn't let me reply. Sara, I love getting to use one of your photos! I couldn't agree more about the senior-friendly chairs. I thought the same thing after the painting was finished. I'd love to spend time right there in that chair... wait... am I spending time in that low chair because I'm waiting for someone to help me get out of it! Ha ha ha

  5. Congrats on your achievement, Helen! This painting is delightful. The best part? I think it's the complete package! I like the way you painted the porch siding, the wreath, and the chair.
